Questions & answers
Getting started
What is HuddleText?+
Group texting for organizations — schools, shuls, camps, teams, and community groups. Your group gets its own phone number; members without smartphones get plain SMS texts, and members with smartphones get the same messages free in our app. You send once, everyone gets it.
How fast can my group be live?+
Minutes. Create your group, add money to your account, and its phone number activates automatically — your members get their welcome texts right away. No multi-day carrier reviews on your end; we've already done that part.
How do people join my group?+
Three ways: they text JOIN and their name to your group's number; they tap your group's one-tap join link; or you add them yourself — paste a list of names and numbers, or pick straight from your phone's contacts (Android). You can require your approval for new joins.
Do members need to download an app?+
No. Everyone can receive by regular text message. Members with smartphones can optionally use the free app — it installs right from the browser (no app store), sends instant notifications, and their messages stop costing your group anything.
Does it work on kosher and filtered phones?+
Yes — that's where HuddleText started. Messages arrive as plain SMS in the regular inbox: no browser, no app, nothing to install. Members reply like they reply to any text.
Pricing & money
What does it cost?+
No monthly fee. A text costs 1.4¢ per person who receives it by SMS (photos 3¢). Members reading in the free app cost nothing. You prepay — load $10 and you have about 714 texts; your portal always shows exactly how many texts you have left.
Is the phone number free? Do I have to pay to get one?+
The number is free — there is no charge for it. It activates automatically the first time you load text money (from $5), because texts can't send from an empty balance anyway. You're never paying for the number — only prepaying for the texts you'll send.
Do members pay to send or receive?+
Receiving is always free — members never pay anything to get messages, by text or in the app. Sending is covered by the group leader's balance by default (1.4¢ per person receiving by SMS, whoever wrote the message). Leaders can optionally switch a group to “members pay for their own messages.”
Who pays for the messages?+
Normally the group leader's balance pays for everything. If you prefer, turn on sender pays in a group's settings: each member then funds their own messages (receiving stays free for everyone). Members add money by card in the chat, or you can gift money from your balance — handy when someone hands you cash.
Can a sponsor cover my texting?+
Yes. Sell a local business a sponsorship — their name rides your group's texts — and 80% of what they pay becomes your text money automatically. You set the price and send them a payment link from your portal; they don't need an account.
What happens if my balance runs out?+
Text delivery pauses (app members still get everything free) and we text you a heads-up. Load money and delivery resumes with the next message — nothing is lost.
Can I get unused money back?+
Yes — money you don't spend on texts can be cashed out weekly to Zelle, PayPal, or Venmo from your portal.
Running your group
What's the difference between a group chat and an announcement list?+
In a group chat, every member's message goes to everyone — like GroupMe, but on any phone. In an announcements list, only you send; when members reply, it goes privately to your inbox, never to the whole list. Each group can be either, and you can switch.
Can I schedule messages?+
Yes — send now, schedule for later, or repeat daily or weekly from your texting dashboard. Weekly reminders send themselves.
How do I control who's in the group?+
Your portal lists every member — remove anyone, re-add them, approve join requests, or pause the whole group. You can also see who reads free in the app (📱) versus by paid text (✉️).
Does every group get its own phone number?+
Every group chat does — the number is how members recognize and text the group. Announcement lists can share one number using join words, so extra lists are free.
For members
I have a smartphone — how do I join and get the app?+
Tap your group's invite link (it's in your welcome text, or ask your organizer). Enter your name and phone number, type the 6-digit code we text you, and you're in the chat. Then two taps make it an app: Add to Home Screen (iPhone: Share button → Add to Home Screen; Android: the Install button) and Turn on free delivery. A HuddleText icon appears on your phone, messages arrive as notifications, and you cost your group nothing. There's no app store involved — the website becomes the app.
How do I read my group's messages online?+
Go to agentamare.com/huddle/chat and enter your phone number — we text you a 6-digit code, and you're in. No account, no password. From a smartphone you can add it to your home screen and turn on notifications to get messages free.
How do I stop getting messages?+
Reply LEAVE to leave that group, or STOP to block all texts from that number (your carrier enforces this — text START to undo it). Reply TEXTS anytime to switch your delivery back to SMS.
Does receiving messages cost me anything?+
Nothing from us — receiving is always free. Your phone plan's standard message rates apply, same as any text.
For businesses
What does sponsoring a group get me?+
Your business's name and message ride the texts a community already reads — delivered to their hands, not a feed they scroll past. You'll see exactly how many messages carried your name. Ask a group leader for their sponsorship link, or browse groups at the sponsor page.
